Bicycle Races

On August 1st cyclists competed Missouri State Championship jersey in downtown Jefferson City. My cousin Zach was in the cat. c race at noon. The heat was astounding. I wore myself out shooting the race and I have no idea how the cyclists managed. The last part of the course was a turn onto a torturous hill and then a fairly level straight. On the last lap as the main pack came around the last corner onto the hill there was an accident that ended up slowing a lot of the cyclists who were subsequently pissseeeeddddddddddd. Unfortunately I was not at that corner when it happened. Dangit.

After the race frozen rolled up hand towels were stuff down the back of Zach’s jersey and he wore one on his head with no shame.

Obviously anyone in a race will try to hit the apex of a turn if they can. I had no idea cyclists would ramp off of the sidewalk ramps at corners to try to get an even tighter line. I was crouched on one of the ramps looking through a 20mm lens. I moved when a bike brushed my arm.

I decided to be safer at corners from then on and try to shoot full body. That was less fun…

Summer Vacations

Went to the fair this past week with Taylor Glascock, Beth Haenni and Grace Haenni. Taylor shot Grace’s highschool senior photos, and I consulted some, held a reflector, and gave her the idea to go to the fair. I snapped shots all the while of course. Here’s Beth a couple times. I had a lot of fun practicing my flashwork.

Taylor had fun with her holga on top of shooting for Grace and I had fun using my new giant reflector on Grace and Taylor as you can see here.

Friday I went to Kansas City with Taylor Glascock. We shopped the plaza and met Emily Van Zandt and her boyfriend Trevan McGee, new news editor for linux pro magazine, for dinner at West Side Local. Dinner was AMAZING. All local foods wonderfully prepared!

Here are Emily and Trevan.

Taylor and I moved on to a Devo and Ben Folds concert after dinner. We met Meghan, a friend of Taylor’s, who got us in for free and took us into the vip section. I got to watch Devo and Ben Folds perform with free beer, free food and two pretty girls. My life is fairly awesome.

Admittedly I am a poor editor. When I shoot I’m already picking favourites and I seek those out immediately when I begin to sort and rate. After that I pretty much ignore everything else.

it was a great day

I flew my kite for the first time in years and years with Alex and her friends.

I threw a frisbee for the first time in over a year. A bunch of us climbed a tree together.

I even met someone in the tree! Thank you Edgar (the tree) for introducing me to cool people like Roze.

Then we all climbed down and watched the “Cotton Mollies” play in Peace Park for a while as we sat with our backs against a tree. They are great. It’s bluegrass/newgrass hipstery stuff. Very fun.

Alex met a 7 week old dog. It was adorable and so playful.

Alex and I went to shakespeares and got a giant veggie pizza, and got fro yo and took it all to Taylor’s and Beth’s where we ate, took a walk and sat in her back yard singing and talking You should have heard our rendition of Billy Joel’s “The Longest Time”, it was gorgeous.

Spring here I come a smilin’.

Having beautiful friends ready to stop in front of the lens is one of the greatest things in life. The lovely Taylor Glascock, a fellow photog and good friend humored me with a fun afternoon shooting her in hipster outfits. How did we get such attitude out of the adorably sweet Taylor? well that’s my secret…
